1. Read the Passage
Open your Bible to Psalm 89:5–7. Read it slowly and picture the scene: the heavens praising God, the assembly of holy ones gathered around Him, and the Most High standing incomparable among them.
2. The Big Idea
Psalm 89 reveals a heavenly assembly — a structured, ordered gathering of spiritual beings who surround God’s throne. Unlike Psalm 82, this is a loyal council. The “holy ones” are spiritual beings who honor God and participate in His rule.
The psalmist emphasizes God’s uniqueness: even among the heavenly beings, none compares to Him. He is “greatly feared” in the council and “awesome above all who are around Him.”
3. Key Terms
- Holy Ones – Loyal members of the heavenly host.
- Assembly – A formal gathering, not chaos; a structured council.
- Fear / Awe – Reverence appropriate to God’s unmatched authority.
- Heavenly Council – The divine courtroom and throne room imagery.
4. Why This Matters
Psalm 89 balances the picture from Psalm 82. Not all spiritual beings are corrupt. The Bible presents a complex supernatural world:
- Some spiritual beings rebel (Psalm 82, Genesis 6, Deut 32)
- Some remain loyal (Psalm 89, Job 1–2, Daniel 7)
This helps us understand why the New Testament speaks of:
- angels
- principalities
- powers
- thrones and dominions
—as a diverse spiritual ecosystem, not a flat category.
