The Disinherited Nations

Deuteronomy 32:8–9

1. Read the Passage

Open your Bible to Deuteronomy 32:8–9. Read it slowly, paying attention to how the nations are divided and what God claims as His own portion.

Note: Compare translations. Some say “sons of Israel,” others “sons of God.” This difference matters for understanding the supernatural worldview of the passage.

2. The Big Idea

Deuteronomy 32:8–9 describes a moment when God divided the nations and assigned them to members of the heavenly host. Israel, however, was not placed under one of these beings. Israel was God’s own inheritance—His personal portion among the nations.

This passage sets the stage for the entire Divine Council worldview: God rules over a heavenly assembly, delegates authority, and retains Israel as His direct people.

3. LXX vs MT

The Masoretic Text (MT) reads “sons of Israel,” but the Septuagint (LXX) and the Dead Sea Scrolls read “sons of God.” The older reading (“sons of God”) supports the idea that God allotted the nations to spiritual beings, not to the descendants of Jacob.

Heiser’s Point: The “sons of God” reading is older and better fits the context of a divine council overseeing the nations.
